King Tide, the highest tide of the year, is rolling into the Seacoast on Thursday October 9th, and area residents and photographers have a chance to capture this natural event and enter their photos in the 3rd Annual NH King Tide Photo Contest. NHCAW is sponsoring the one-day contest to help residents and community leaders identify coastal areas vulnerable to tidal flooding, visualize impacts from projected rising sea levels, and plan for the future.
This year’s King Tide is expected to be around 10.5 feet. A typical tide in the Seacoast region is between 6 and 8 feet. “This extreme high tide on October 9, 2014 will illustrate what may become the new tidal norm due to sea-level rise,” explained Roger Stephenson, NH consultant for the Union of Concerned Scientists and Stratham representative on the NH Coastal Risks and Hazards Commission.
Participating photographers and interested members of the public are invited to attend an evening Photo Show and People’s Choice Awards on Thursday, October 9th from 6pm-8pm at the Seashell Oceanfront Pavilion, Hampton Beach.
“We hope participants in the King Tides Photo Contest will document how the astronomical high tide that day affects wharves, causeways, marshes, beaches and other coastal settings,” said Steve Miller, Coastal Training Coordinator at the Great Bay National Estuarine Reserve and co-chair of the NH Coastal Adaptation Workgroup.
Interested citizens are encouraged to join the contest by submitting images by one or both means:
- from cameras or smart phones via social media (Twitter and Instagram): use hashtag #KingTidesNH When submitting images on social media or by email, participants should try to include the date, time and location of the photo(s).
- or via email: attach hi-res photos and send to KingTidesNH@gmail.com.
